Family Literacy

Despite Non-Formal Education Center (NFEC) under the Ministry of Education has extensively implemented various educational program targeting adult women, men and children, they are still deprived of getting access to lifelong education.  There are various reasons behind this. One of the reasons is scarcity of reading materials for literacy participant of their interest.  To fulfill this gap Family Literacy Materials could be one of the most powerful materials.  Family literacy is a term used to describe parents and children - or more broadly - adults and children - learning together. It is also known as intergenerational literacy, and in some cases, community literacy. Family literacy can describe the way parents, family and community members use literacy at home and in their communities. Family Literacy program are driven by comprehensive, holistic approaches to education in which parents and children learn together.  Family literacy programs address the literacy strengths and needs of the family/community while promoting adults' involvement in children's education, recognizing adults as a powerful influence on children's academic success. Family literacy program provide both parent-initiated and child-initiated activities to support development of those relationships and to increase the motivation to learn for both parent and child.

Educational Resource and Development Center Nepal (ERDCN) has also been running family literacy program in different Rural Municipalities of Gorkha district in collaboration with Community Learning Center (CLC).   To support the program ERDCN has produced 16 titles of Family Literacy Materials with funding support of UNESCO Office in Kathmandu.  However to make the lifelong education accessible for the community people, 16 titles of Family Literacy Materials are not enough as well as orientation on methodology of using these materials need to be provided to CLC members.   In this context ERDCN organized one and half day orientation program on using methodology of Family Literacy Materials as well as writing new titles.  Participants of the orientation program were the members of CLCs in Gorkha district.

Main purpose of the orientation program was to provide knowledge on Family Literacy concept and materials.

Objective of the workshop:

Make the participants capable to facilitate Family Literacy Class

Enhance the participants' writing skill to write new titles of Family Literacy Materials

Contribute to achieve SDG 4 : Education aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
